I need housing!
I want to host visitors!
Who's organizing this thing?
That's not so many people. You need volunteers?
There are cheaper flights into Oakland Airport. Is it impossible to get into SF from there?
Can I get someone to pick me up at the airport?
Why do you need to know what I eat for the housing form? Or how much I'm willing to spend on food?
Why are you charging so much?
Will volunteering help reduce my registration fees?
What's up with the team thing for the Olympics?
What should I pack?
1: I need housing!
You can signup for housing when you register
2: I want to host visitors!
You can signup as a host at registration.
You do not need to signup for the event to host, but you'll be
missing out!
3: Who's organizing this thing?
The core organizing team is Cianna Stewart, Maggie Moon, and Megan
Hornbecker. On specific assignment (and never underestimated!) are Dave
Madison, Josh Ellinger, Claudine Co, and Elliott Donnelly.
4: That's not so many people. You need volunteers?
YES! We need people to help us at exchange events by setting and cleaning
up, staffing the front desk, selling t-shirts, keeping water jugs filled,
etc. We also need local folks to take groups of 5-10 visitors around the
city to do a little sight-seeing (choose activities that you're interested
in doing yourself, e.g. CD shopping, alcatraz, sailing, rock climbing,
mural/garden/architecture walks). We will need people to do some food
shopping and driving, too. If you're interested in volunteering, please send
a note to Megan at [email protected].
5: There are cheaper flights into Oakland Airport. Is it impossible to get into SF from there?
Not at all. It's actually really easy to get into San Fran from Oakland
using the BART train. There's a shuttle directly from the airport, and then
the train comes right into SF. Also, some of our hosts will be in the East
Bay. Let us know that you're taking that option and we'll try to place you
appropriately.
6: Can I get someone to pick me up at the airport?
This is a tough one. We are hoping that we can organize shuttles for
Lindy Hoppers who are arriving at around the same time. Please provide us
with your flight information asap and we'll try to get the transportation
thing nailed down.
7: Why do you need to know what I eat for the housing form? Or how much I'm willing to spend on food?
Many of our hosts are social people (go figure!) and want to go out to
dinner with their guests, and we want to help them out by matching up people
who want to eat at similar places, etc. Also, some of the hosts will try to
have snacks or breakfast stuff at their homes, or don't want you to bring in
something to their home that they won't eat, so matching up food restraints
is important there, too.
8: Why are you charging so much?
The original idea of an exchange was to have a group of dancers from one
city visit another city, stay in their homes, dance in their local venues,
and generally not spend much at all. This system works as long as the
exchanges are small. However, this promises to be the biggest (and we hope
an excellent) exchange yet. As a result, we've had to book larger venues and
they don't come cheap. We kept the price as low as possible, but we're not
personally wealthy enough to underwrite this event either.
9: Will volunteering help reduce my registration fees?
Depending on what volunteer role you're taking. We are reducing fees for
a certain amount of work in exchange. We need so many volunteers that we'd
be guaranteed to go broke ourselves if we waived fees for all volunteers. In
order to make this fair, we will probably do most work-exchange in the form
of a refund.
10: What's up with the team thing for the Olympics?
We're hoping that cities or other assemblages of like-minded people will
organize teams of 4-8 people (or more!) to "compete" (oh we're using that
word soooo loosely) in the Team Events. We're hoping that teams will get
into it by picking a name, dressing in a way that the rest of us can
recognize their team-ness, and maybe even coming up with a team song, cheer,
or distinctive team dance moment. Most olympic events will happen on
Saturday afternoon so that we can have the maximum number of people there.
For more information, see the Games page.
11: What should I pack?
Your dance shoes!
